The First Exmouth Mussel Festival

The 12th September saw the first Exmouth Mussel Festival take place on the sea front in Exmouth, Devon.

For years, Miles Blood-Symth of The Exmouth Mussel Company, has farmed this fantastic sustainable food, supplying local restaurants and fishmongers. In fact the quality of River Exe Mussels is held in such high regard, that their are demands throughout the UK and Europe, however the best place to eat them has to be Exmouth!

Local chefs were quick to volunteer for the event, with award winning Oliver Guyard-Mulkerrin, owner/chef of Les Saveurs, Kathy Evans, owner/chef of The Chronicle and the team from the River Exe Cafe, all taking to the cooking platform to show how versatile, nutritious and tasty River Exe Mussels are. So popular was the seafood that extra supplies had to be brought in, which wasn't a real problem - how many chefs can claim produce so fresh it's delivered on foot?

As well as the food element to this new festival, Crossed Anchors Micro Brewery was show casing their latest creations. It proved to be so good, it sold out before the end!

There was also a sand sculpture competition, which proved as popular with the adults as the children and a kite making workshop. The sand sculpture competition was won by Team Kraken and their excellent creation can be seen on the Facebook place of The Exmouth Festival by clicking here. Judging and prizes were awarded by Captain Jack Sparrow, who is reported as having a difficult time deciding on the winner due to the high standard.

Once everyone’s appetite and thirst was taken care of, there was live music and even the promised rain held off.
